Visa Information
There are 100+ nationalities that need to apply for a visitor visa to enter Canada. As examples, China, India, Saudi Arabia and most countries in Africa are on the visa-required list.
Many countries (most European countries, United Kingdom, Australia...) simply need an eTA. It's valid for up to 5 years (depending on your nationality) or until the passport expires - whichever comes first - and for stays up to six months. It costs $7 CAD. No visa nor eTA are needed for US citizens, just a valid passport.
In case you connect through the US, make sure that you also comply with all US regulations, which also apply to passengers with international connections.
